The 22nd World Congress of IFSO (International Federation For The Surgery Of Obesity & Metabolic Disorders) will be held in London, United Kingdom, August 29 through September 2, 2017. As the prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes increases, so too does the burden of disease and associated worsening of quality of life for patients suffering from these conditions. Since its inception, the main goal of IFSO has been the optimization of the treatment of patients with obesity.

On behalf of Dr. Kelvin Higa, IFSO President, Mr. Richard Welbourn, IFSO Congress President, and the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS), I would like to invite you all to attend IFSO 2017.

IFSO 2017 Scientific Program
The scientific program for IFSO 2017 provides a unique opportunity for all those interested in obesity and metabolic surgery to share their experiences, expertise, and knowledge and seek practical solutions in their search to eradicate and manage this epidemic. IFSO 2017 will offer more than eight postgraduate courses; multiple symposia; and numerous oral, video, and live operating sessions. Joint symposia with anesthetic, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, and internal medicine colleagues will highlight the multidisciplinary nature of obesity treatment. Additional joint sessions will include fertility, psychology, and psychiatry experts. Integrated health will also be represented throughout the scientific sessions.

The program will cover both surgical and nonsurgical treatment strategies for obesity. There will be exciting sessions discussing new, less invasive technology and others discussing gastroenterological problems after bariatric surgery. The post-graduate courses include the 6th International Consensus Summit on Sleeve Gastrectomy (ICSSG-6) led by Dr. Michel Gagner on August 29–30, 2017. ICSSG-6 will include more than 20 live surgeries and numerous debates. IFSO 2017 will host a consensus workshop on One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass-Mini Gastric Bypass (OAGB-MGB) and an exciting “Dragon’s Den meets Shark Tank” session where participants can pitch ideas for randomized controlled trials to a panel of experts. Innovative sessions include the use of technology in obesity and bariatric surgery, medicolegal issues, and the impact of bariatric tourism.

Regional variations in practice will be recognized during special symposia for the following IFSO Chapters: Latin American, European, Asia Pacific, North America (American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery [ASMBS]), and Pan-Arab.

IFSO aims to celebrate the culture of its congress venue during social events and ceremonies. During IFSO 2012, Dr. Pradeep Chowbey welcomed His Holiness the Dalai Lama who inaugurated and blessed the World Congress in New Delhi, India. IFSO 2015 in Vienna, Austria, kicked off with a Viennese dance performance.

IFSO 2017 will also have a great social program including a welcome reception with typical British pomp and ceremony. We are planning an unforgettable farewell dinner with a trip down the river Thames and an amazing dinner, dancing and entertainment at the National Maritime Museum, located within the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Greenwich.

Congress Venue
The congress venue, the Queen Elizabeth II center (http://qeiicentre.london), is located in the heart of London, directly opposite Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. It is also a five-minute walk to the river Thames and the London Eye. The venue is served by outstanding transport links providing great access to everything the city has to offer from hotels and world-class restaurants to culture, museums, shopping, and nightlife. It is also within an hour’s transfer from five international airports. In addition to the wealth of scientific education and networking offered by the official congress program, you will be able to take advantage of London’s attractions in your free time.

On behalf of the local (BOMSS), scientific and IFSO committees, I would like to welcome you all to the great city of London. London with its cosmopolitan components is an ideal environment for meeting and exchanging knowledge and new ideas. For more information please visit the congress website www.ifso2017.com.
