In this exclusive interview, on behalf of Bariatric Times, Dr. Daniel Jones, Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School, posed questions to the leadership of the Fellowship Council. Dr. Jones is the director of the “MIS fellowship with emphasis in Bariatric Surgery” at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The Fellowship Council is responsible for creating a curriculum for fellowships in advanced gastrointestinal surgery and standardizing the fellowship application and selection process, as well as overseeing the match process. Gastrointestinal Hormones and their Relationship to Bariatric Surgery

When most of us learned about gastrointestinal physiology, cholecystokinin was an enzyme. It turns out that it is actually a powerful endocrine hormone as well. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract produces dozens of peptides that enter the circulation and cause a variety of effects relating to nutrient acquisition and energy balance. Since many of these mechanisms have only been elucidated within the last decade, many practicing surgeons lack complete understanding of how these hormones work and how they may be altered by surgery. Many individuals who have achieved massive weight loss either secondary to bariatric surgery or as a result of lifestyle changes are eager to have body contour concerns addressed. Patients often seek both functional and aesthetic improvement. Invariably, plastic surgery plays a critical role in this process. The approach taken by the plastic surgeon is often influenced by many factors, including patient goals, surgeon preference, patient finances, and, of course, patient health. Careful planning on the part of the plastic surgeon will diminish the likelihood of complications and improve results.
