Right Upper Quadrant Abdominal Pain and Elevated Liver/Pancreatic Enzymes after Gastric Bypass

Welcome to “Checklists in Bariatric Surgery.” This column’s aim is to help bariatric surgeons quickly review the reasons for potential problems when caring for bariatric patients.

In this eleventh installment of the column, we discuss upper quadrant abdominal pain and elevated liver/pancreatic enzymes after gastric bypass. Right upper quadrant pain is an unusual symptom in patients after gastric bypass; nevertheless, the differential diagnosis should be related to peptic ulcer disease in the gastric remnant or duodenum, biliary tract pathology and renal or colonic disorders. The latter are not included in this checklist, but bariatric surgeons should keep them in mind.
