This year’s Minimally Invasive Surgery Symposium (MISS) will mark the 15th anniversary for for the meeting and Dr. Philip R. Schauer’s 15th turn as Executive Director. Through the years, Dr. Schauer, Director of Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at Cleveland Clinic’s Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, Cleveland, Ohio, has addressed thousands of advanced laparoscopic surgeons and bariatric specialists gathering annually from around the globe to attend this premier meeting in minimally invasive surgery.
The 2015 MISS, which will take place February 25 through February 28 at the Red Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, offers up to 32 continuing medical education (CME) credits, including optional maintenance of certification (MOC) self-assessment credit, in four key topic areas, including colon disease, hernia, and foregut, but it is its focus on metabolic/bariatric surgery that represents the foundation of the MISS meeting.
2015 MISS Featuring Four Keynote Speakers
One new and special feature of 2015 MISS will be not one, but four keynote speakers. The Metabolic/Bariatric Program keynote presentation will be given by Dr. Arya Sharma, Professor of Medicine and Chair of Obesity Research and Management at the Alberta Diabetes Institute, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, and Past-President of the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Sharma’s keynote will focus on the Edmonton Obesity Staging System. He will also speak on integrating medications and surgery. Other MISS keynote speakers include Drs. William C. Meyers (hernia), C. Daniel Smith (foregut), and Michael J. Stamos (colon).
In addition to compelling general sessions, scientific poster sessions, and industry-sponsored lunch symposia, the 2015 MISS also offers optional (extra fee required) hands-on workshops in laparoscopic suturing and endoscopic interventions. MISS hands-on workshops have limited capacity and are first come, first served.
The Colon Program Highlights
The Colon program begins Wednesday, February 25, 2015. This program will open with a welcome from Course Co-director Dr. John H. Marks. Session 1 will discuss deep vein thrombosis, colon cancer, pneumoperitoneum, and Trendelenberg positioning, 3D optics in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, and fast-track protocols. Remaining sessions include presentations on the following: robotic surgery, total mesorectal excision (TME), transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), and transanal abdominal transanal (TATA) resection with video demonstrations. The course will conclude with a keynote presentation, “What is the Current State of Minimally Invasive Colon and Rectal Surgery in the US and What is the Ceiling?” by Dr. Michael J. Stamos.
The Hernia/Foregut Program Highlights
The Hernia/Foregut program begins Thursday, February 26, 2015. Subjects to be discussed during the MISS hernia/foregut program will include evidenced-based assessment of bio prosthetics in hernia repair, fallacy of the ideal mesh: mesh of the future, improving hernia outcomes through collaboration, and laparoscopic pancreatic resection. The course will include two keynote presentations: “Taking the Leap—Time to Expand Your Horizon,” by Dr. William C. Meyers, and “Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy” by Dr. C. Daniel Smith.
Metabolic/Bariatric Surgery Program Highlights
This year’s MISS metabolic/bariatric program, which is scheduled for one and a half days, will open on Friday, February 27, 2015, with a review of the current science on metabolic and diabetes surgery. The review will include an update on the mechanisms of diabetes remission. The program will then focus on quality and optimizing outcomes, and move on to a videofest on complications. It will then culminate with presentations on controversies and new frontiers in metabolic/bariatric surgery, including the following: single loop duodenal switch: results over five years; Duo Intragastric Balloon (ReShape Medical, Inc., San Clemente, California) United States trial, and a debate on laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy versus laparoscopic gastric bypass, gauging opinions on which will be the dominant procedure of the future.
The MISS Metabolic/Bariatric Program faculty includes prominent leadership of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, such as current ASMBS President Dr. John Morton, and Immediate Past President Dr. Ninh Nguyen. In addition to Dr. Schauer, other past ASMBS Presidents on the MISS faculty include Dr. Bruce Wolfe, MISS Metabolic/Bariatric Program Co-director, plus Drs. Jaime Ponce, Scott Shikora, and Kenneth MacDonald. This elite group will be joined by more than one dozen additional internationally renowned metabolic and bariatric experts.
