Dear Friends and Readers,
Welcome to the November 2020 issue of Bariatric Times! As we near the end of the calendar year, and as COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the United States, I hope everyone continues to stay safe and healthy. Here, I will outline the content in this issue of BT.
First, we present a spotlight of the Michigan chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), written by Carl Pesta, DO, FASMBS. The chapter first formed as the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative in 2005 and was officially organized as an ASMBS chapter in 2008.
Next, we present the return of the Women in Surgery column, where this month we highlight Saniea Majid, MD, FACS, FASMBS, about her original research based on a survey of a small group of ASMBS members. The survey primarily focused on weight regain (WR) and inadequate weight loss (IWL) and how that relates to the way practices handle the entire bariatric surgery journey for patients.
After that, Ott-Fontes et al conducted an original research article titled “Comparison of the Severity of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Patients with Obesity with and without Diabetes.” The study confirmed there is a strong overlap of patients who have obesity and NAFLD.
Following that, the Raising the Standard column highlights the National Opioid Policy, and our Medical Methods in Obesity column discusses the Pediatric Obesity Algorithm that was developed by the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA). There is also a symposium synopsis of the OMA’s most recent virtual conference.
Thank you for reading this month’s issue of BT, and as always we welcome your feedback, as well as manuscript submissions for potential publication!
Sincerely,
John M. Morton, MD, MPH, MHA, FACS, FASMBS, ABOM
